Polling will be held on May 19 in the seventh phasein all 13 seats in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh each, nine in West Bengal, eightseats each in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, four in Himachal Pradesh, three inJharkhand and the lone seat Chandigarh, amounting to 59 seats spread over 7states and one Union terrority.
Campaigning for the last phase of the staggered LokSabha elections spread over more than a month drew to a close on May 17 as topleaders sought to muster a final show of strength in the contest for 59 seatswith Prime Minister Narendra Modi among those in the fray.
Many prominent candidates including Union MinistersHarsimrat Kaur Badal, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Manoj Singh, former Lok SabhaSpeaker Meira Kumar, actors Sunny Deol, Kirron Kher, Ravi Kishan and ShatruganSinha are in the fray.
In a first, campaigning in West Bengal came to anend 20 hours before the scheduled time on the orders of the ElectionCommission. The poll body had Wednesday ordered campaigning in West Bengalconstituencies to end at 10 pm on May 16 in the wake of violence between theBJP and the TMC in Kolkata during Amit Shah’s roadshow.
Adequate security arrangements have been made toconduct free, fair and peaceful elections, officials said. The polling will beheld from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
